With humble beginnings as a small cooperative in 2010, Gishyita Coffee has grown to 995 smallholder farmers who have been transforming quality and productivity improvement. 5 years after the start of these improvements the community has seen an output increase of over 350% all while becoming highly sought after for their highly sweet coffees. 8 years after the small cooperative formed, the Gishyita mill was purchased by Providence Byiringiro who made it his mission to improve the quality of life for coffee growers in the community. Providence saw potential here with the ideal terroir for creating beautiful coffees. Located on volcanic slopes surrounding Lake Kivu, the soil is nutrient-abundant, while high-altitude cliffs trap winds that help evenly dry processed coffee. With the addition of Providence’s educational training and infrastructure reinvestments, Gishyita coffee has become home to the best Rwandan coffees.
