The Batwa, known as the ancient dwellers of the Congo rainforest, have lived in harmony with the land for over 4,000 years. Umoja (Swahili for “solidarity”) Batwa represents the wide efforts to integrate coffee production into the Batwa community, providing opportunity and solidarity to an isolated community that has historically been persecuted and excluded from Congo’s economy.

Umoja Batwa is produced by 105 Batwa, pygmies, smallholder farmers. Due to their smaller stature and oftentimes isolation in Congo’s rainforest, this community has often been marginalized, persecuted and excluded from the modern economy. Their integration in the coffee sector serves as an opportunity to participate in the economy and society and have access to the same opportunities afforded to all Congolese citizens.
